Violent protests in Syria, Saudi Arabia Pull ambassador

Kingdom of Saudi Arabia withdrew its ambassador (ambassador) from Damascus, Syria for consultations. The withdrawal was done because the Saudis did not receive the ongoing situation in Syria.

In a statement, Saudi King Abdullah called on leaders of Syria to stop the killings in the country.

"Saudi Arabia announced the withdrawal of its ambassador for consultations," King Abdullah said in a statement released in Riyadh as reported by AFP news agency on Monday (08/08/2011). Saudi king also called on Syria to stop the "killing machine and bloodshed before it's too late."

Hundreds of people have been killed in operations launched by the Syrian army and police against anti-government protesters. Demonstrations demanding the resignation of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has lasted several months.

Saudi king condemned the violence perpetrated Syrian authorities against the demonstrators.

"Many people who have become martyrs, their blood has been shed and many others have been injured ... It is not compatible with religion, values and morals," said King.

"The kingdom does not accept a situation in Syria because of these developments can not be justified," added King of Arabia.

Saudi King also warned about the Saudi support to the Syrian government in the past. But now the Saudis have to take a stance because of the bloodshed that continues to happen in Syria.
