Atiyah Abd al-Rahman, the two number two in Al Qaeda after Osama bin Laden confirmed killed in Pakistan. Death of Al-Rahman informed by the White House in the United States.
U.S. Defence Secretary says Leon Panetta, since the arrest of bin Laden, Al Qaeda's strength has weakened. The U.S. successfully launched several operations, including the killing of Al-Rahman.
"Now is the right moment, after what has happened to bin Laden, to suppress them," Panetta said as quoted by news.com.au, Saturday (08/27/2011).
"I believe if we continue this effort, we could actually destroy the Al-Qaeda threat," he continued.
Al-Rahman reportedly killed on 22 August in an area in Waziristan, Pakistan, based on information from a source. Unfortunately, the source declined to elaborate in more detail how the former Afghan fighters were killed.
Al-Rahman is believed to be someone close to Osama. Born in Libya, Al-Rahman then joined the army bin Laden in Afghanistan against the Soviet Union.
Setah bin Laden dead, the U.S. found some evidence that Al-Rahman has a role as the operational head of Al-Qaeda today.
