NATO helicopter crashes in Afghanistan

A NATO helicopter crashed in Afghanistan during the middle of the anti-Taliban operation launched. The incident caused some casualties on the part of foreign troops.

The helicopter crashed in Wardak province, eastern Afghanistan on on Friday, August 5 late in the evening local time.


"The joint forces (foreign and Afghan) launched an operation against the Taliban in the district of Zayd Ages overnight," said provincial spokesman Shahid Shahidullah as reported by AFP news agency on Saturday (06/08/2011).

"Eight militants were killed. A coalition helicopter was fired on guerrillas when it fell," he said.

"We're not sure whether this happens because the guerrillas shot or not but there are several casualties of foreign troops by the incident," he added.

Forces spokesman International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said they currently are investigating what happened.

"We know of an incident involving a helicopter in eastern Afghanistan," the spokesman said adding he could not give further details at this time.

According to Taliban spokesman, Zabiullah Mujahid, the group responsible for the fall of the heli.
