At least 190
people were killed when a ferry overturned in the popular tourist island of
Zanzibar. While more than 600 people survived the crash.
State
Minister for Emergency Zanzibar, Mohammed Aboud said the death toll from the
disaster increased to 190. Previous estimates put the number of deaths in the
range of numbers 163.
Aboud, as
reported by AFP on Sunday (9/11/2011) said the rescue team so far has saved 610
people, but rescue efforts have been suspended due to nightfall.
It is
estimated that more than 800 people were on board the ferry. Most passengers
are families who returned home after a holiday to celebrate the end of the holy
month of Ramadan.
While quoted
by the BBC, one survivor said the ferry was overcrowded by passengers and then
drowned in the fast-flowing waters between Tanzania and Pemba Island, Saturday
(10 / 9) morning.
A witness
another, Abdullah Saied, said the ferry MV Spice Islanders that fateful so

Dar es Salaam, eventually cancel their intentions.
"After
the ship sank about 01.00 local time early morning rescue services managed to
attract 230 people from the water and picked up 40 bodies," said Mohamed
